YeeeHaaaw! Howdy Cowboy?

For this week’s adventure, we headed to Davie, Florida for the Orange Blossom Festival Rodeo. I had never been to a live rodeo event before. In my mind, I was expecting a small, round arena with wooden bleachers all around. What I found was completely unexpected! The Bergeron Rodeo Fairgrounds, where the event was held, was huge and very well appointed. The covered outdoor arena was very big, well lit, had great sound and good sitting areas.

The event on the evening of our adventure was the semi final round of the rodeo festival and it was exciting! There was a capacity crowd of over 5,000 rodeo fans waiting to cheer on their favorite cowboy. I must say that the whole thing felt very patriotic. The American Flag was flying high, and proud everywhere you looked and the host of the event was great at building upon the patriotism every chance he got. The music and DJ were also very good and not what I was expecting at all! He even played country hip-hop…. (Hip Hop in a Honky Tonk)

The rodeo itself consisted of several types of events from riding broncos, to steer wrestling and calf roping. I liked the bronc riding the best, since I found myself cringing at the other events because of the way some of the animals were treated. I can understand why this sport is banned in several countries. Other fun events included a kid’s dance competition and the world famous “Team Ghost Riders“, a troupe of cowboy monkeys who ride Border Collie dogs and corral goats. (Yep…..I can’t make this stuff up!)

Ralph riding the bullBefore leaving, I had to try one last thing: Riding the mechanical bull! That’s right… I did it! And it was hard. I used to look at people doing it and thought that I could do much better. As you’ll see in the video, I was just as bad as the people I used to laugh at! The best part of all was laughing so hard about the whole thing that I was exhausted afterward.

I don’t know that I will go to another rodeo, but I will definitely try the mechanical bull the next time that I am at a bar….I must tame that beast!

What are adventure are you planning to take next week?

Remember, every week without a new adventure or adventures is a week that you’ll never get back. Make it count.
